The San Diego Opera

Opera produces 5 main stage productions in the Civic Theatre (3rd and B Street) from
January through May.
Ian Campbell - San Diego Opera
Ian Campbell has been the General Director of the San Diego Opera since 1983. Campbell
joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Assistant Artistic Administrator, and in July
1983, became General Director of San Diego Opera. He is Chairman of Opera America, and
locally is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Convention and Visitors
Bureau, and an Advisory Council Member of the San Diego-Tijuana Sister Cities Society. As
a Guest Professor of Music at San Diego State University in 1986, he conducted annual
master classes for singers at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara for seven
years, and chaired the judging panel for the Metropolitan Opera auditions in the Sydney
Opera House in Australia in August 1989. Campbell was the San Diego Press Club Headliner
of the Year for the Arts in 1991, and in 1997 was chosen as one of the Fathers of the Year
for San Diego.
The 2002 - 2003 International Season
The San Diego Opera will feature Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, Bellini's tragic Norma,
the west coast premiere of Therese Raquin, Verdi's stunning adaptation of Shakespeare's

Otello and Puccini's all-time classic, Madama Butterfly. Tickets are as low as $20 and
english translations are projected right onto the stage, the San diego Opera really does
make music worth seeing.
History of the San Diego Opera
The Opera in San diego was founded in 1965 and is currently one of the top ten opera
companies in the United States, as rated by "Opera America," a national organization
serving the opera community. Under the leadership of General Director Ian Campbell, the
Company presents five grand opera productions and special recital and concert events each
season featuring major international opera stars and the best of the young American
singers.
Turn on your radio, sit back, relax and get ready to relive the excitement of San Diego
Opera from the comfort of your home. June is Sand Diego Opera Month n KPBS 89.5 FM (89.1
FM in La Jolla) and to celebrate we're broadcasting each of our five mainstage productions
from the 2001-2002 International Season. The opera begins at 7:00 p.m. during each Sunday
